THE PANELISTS
Laura Marcero is a Partner in Grant Thornton’s Corporate Advisory & Restructuring Services practice located in Southfield (Detroit), Michigan. The practice works with Fortune 500 and middle market organizations and their stakeholders to evaluate financial and operational issues adversely affecting performance and develops strategic alternatives to address the challenges they are facing. Grant Thornton has been involved in over 400 cases in the automotive sector representing various constituents.
Laura has 13 years of experience providing advisory services to clients in a number of different situations such as debtor work, creditor’s committees, financial institutions, due diligence and customer groups. She also has vast experience in bankruptcy related engagements and has worked in a variety of districts throughout the Midwest and East Coast.
John C. Rijo is a Principal with Stairway Capital, Corporate Lending responsible for identifying, evaluating, and managing portfolio investments. John has been involved in various small and middle-market automotive investments involving tier one and two manufacturing, distribution, and after-market parts. Stairway was also actively involved in GM’s bank debt and, most notably, sat on the Steering Committee for Chrysler’s First-Lien Lenders. Prior to joining Stairway, John was a consultant to RAS Management Advisors and performed financial advisory and operational advisory services, including assuming interim management positions, at numerous middle market companies across a variety of industries, including auto.
Robert T. Schmidt is a Partner at Kramer Levin. Mr. Schmidt has represented numerous official creditor committees, bondholders, financial institutions and debtors in all aspects of bankruptcy and restructuring since 1989.
Recent representations for which he has had primary or significant responsibility include the official creditors’ committees for: General Motors, Chrysler LLC , Cooper-Standard Holdings, Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., Dana Automotive, and Dura Automotive. He represented the senior bank group for: Silicon Graphics, and Recycled Paper Greetings (senior bank group); BearingPoint (Deloitte LLP as purchaser). He also represented the debtor in Ascendia Brands, Inc., Malden Mills, Inc., and Berry Hill Galleries, Inc.
THE MODERATOR
Sheila Smith is a Principal and the National Service Line Leader for the Reorganization Services practice of Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP (“Deloitte FAS”). In addition, Ms. Smith leads the New England Financial Advisory Services Function overseeing Corporate Finance, Forensic & Dispute, Valuation, Economic Consulting and Business Intelligence Services.
She possesses extensive hands-on experience in the areas of turnaround, bankruptcy and restructuring advisory for diverse parties-in-interest including debtors, secured creditors and unsecured creditor committees. Sheila has more than 17 years of industry experience in manufacturing, retail, distribution and high technology. Ms. Smith has worked on behalf of several private equity firms and publicly traded clients to assess portfolio companies with respect to risk and formulating exit strategies to maximize recovery. In addition she has extensive experience working in the consumer products industry to deliver cost containment and performance improvement services to return companies to profitability.
